What Does the Federal Government Do?

Sustainable Development Strategy 2030 (SDS 2030)

In the Sustainable Development Strategy 2030 (SDS 2030), the Federal Council sets out the guidelines for its sustainability policy. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development serves as the reference framework. The SDS 2030 aims to coordinate different policy areas and align various sectoral activities of the federal government more strongly with sustainable development. As a cross-cutting strategy, SDS 2030 defines goals up to 2030, as well as strategic directions for domestic and foreign policy, focusing on three key areas:

• Sustainable consumption and production
• Climate, energy, and biodiversity
• Equal opportunities and social cohesion

The strategic coordination and oversight of the implementation of SDS 2030, as well as reporting to the United Nations (UN), are the responsibility of the Agenda 2030 Steering Committee, which consists of representatives from the most relevant federal offices at the directorate level. The operational management of the SDS 2030 implementation is led by two Agenda 2030 Delegates, appointed by the Federal Council, from the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC/UVEK) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA/EDA). Within DETEC, the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE) is responsible for the domestic coordination of SDS 2030 and ensures overarching communication on the 2030 Agenda at the national level. On the international level, coordination is managed by the FDFA.
