Example of target for memberships and political engagement

By 2030, 80% of our trade association memberships will align with our sustainability goals.

  • Measure 1Seek dialogue with associations

Review your current memberships and compare the political positions and lobbying activities of the organisations you belong to with your sustainability goals. Ask these organisations to support you in your commitment to sustainability and give them a clear timeframe (e.g. one year) for concrete measures. Otherwise, withdraw from the associations.

  • Measure 2Join organisations with a focus on sustainability.

Identify alternative umbrella organisations and join sustainability initiatives. If there is not yet a corresponding organisation in your sector, join forces with like-minded people and establish one.

  • Measure 3 Raise awareness of sustainability issues

Enter into constructive dialogue with the public and share your experience of sustainability measures in your company with other members of your associations. Use your network and communication channels to raise awareness of sustainability issues and the active role of business.

Relevance & added value

Business associations are crucial points of contact for politicians regarding the economy's needs for long-term sustainable political framework conditions – whether for regulation or deregulation. For the transformation to succeed, it is therefore essential that changes are implemented not only on a small scale but also on a large scale. Business organisations play a vital role here in promoting a sustainable economy – but they must listen to their members' needs. This makes it all the more important for companies to speak out and show that there are also business representatives who support effective climate protection and are committed to a sustainable transformation of the economy in social and ecological terms.
