Example of target for medical staff working conditions

By 2026, we aim to achieve over 80% satisfaction regarding career development opportunities, working conditions and fair treatment regardless of gender, as measured by annual staff surveys.

  • Measure 1Improve staff development and equality

Training package: Provide an annual training budget covering external courses, conferences (e.g. National Conference Health 2030) and facilitate best practice exchanges with other practitioners.

Research leave: Offer special leave, reduced hours or sabbatical programmes for long-serving staff, particularly for participation in relevant research projects or innovative initiatives.

Equal pay: Develop clear, transparent remuneration guidelines based on objective criteria to eliminate gender-based pay disparities.

  • Measure 2Promote work-life balance

Rota management and job sharing: Optimise staff rotas with minimal notice periods for holiday requests. Enable staff to swap shifts using online tools and clear guidelines. Implement job sharing schemes allowing two staff members to split a full-time post for greater flexibility.

Commuting and transport: Provide staff subsidies for public transport to ensure efficient, stress-free commuting. Offer cycle-to-work schemes, secure bicycle storage and maintenance facilities.

Family-friendly policies: Establish workplace nurseries or support access to external childcare services. Support staff during and after parental leave with flexible return options and reintegration programmes.

Remote working: Enable administrative and telemedicine staff to work from home where feasible.

  • Measure 3Expand technological support for staff

Robot assistance: Invest in robotics and mechanical aids to support physically demanding tasks, such as patient mobilisation and positioning, reducing physical strain and injury risks.

Documentation technology: Deploy modern documentation systems and digital solutions to enhance efficiency, including electronic patient records, voice control systems and automated documentation tools to reduce administrative burden and improve accuracy.

Ergonomic workspace design: Ensure hospital, healthcare facility and home office workstations meet ergonomic standards, including height-adjustable desks, ergonomic chairs and other equipment to prevent physical strain.

Modern IT equipment: Supply staff with up-to-date technology, such as modern dictation devices for medical staff, alongside current software updates for electronic patient records.

  • Measure 4Implement health-promotion measures

Support staff physical and mental wellbeing through workplace sports groups, fitness classes and gym memberships. Encourage healthy eating by providing fresh fruit, nutritious snacks and affordable, balanced meals in canteens or alternatives. Support mental health through access to counselling and stress management programmes, based on regular stress assessments and partnerships with external specialists.
