Example of a trading company in eastern Switzerland with advanced warehouse logistics

Publikationsdatum: 2. April 2025
Letzte Änderung: 3. April, 2025

This eastern Swiss company in the electrical wholesale sector has already made significant progress in warehouse logistics, particularly by building an environmentally friendly high-bay warehouse made of wood. The corporate strategy focuses clearly on sustainability and integrates modern technologies to ensure efficient and ecological warehouse logistics. The company actively pursues goals to improve environmental performance and also involves its suppliers in these sustainability goals to promote a holistic and responsible logistics solution.

Goal 1

Measures

  • Set up an intelligent energy management system to monitor and optimise electricity consumption in real time.
  • Replace all warehouse lighting systems with LED technology with motion detectors to minimise lighting time.
  • Expand photovoltaic systems on warehouse roofs to produce at least five times more renewable energy compared to the base year. The reference value in the base year is the MWh for the energy consumption of the storage infrastructure and the MWh of solar power produced.

Goal 2

By 2026, we will increase the proportion of recyclable materials in our warehouse processes to 50% by introducing reusable packaging and optimising internal recycling systems, and by 2030 we will ensure 100% of all shipments use certified packaging.

Measures

  • Introduce reusable packaging and pallets for all internal warehouse processes.
  • Work with suppliers to reduce packaging materials and switch to recyclable alternatives and certified packaging, possibly finding new partners for certified* packaging supply. *Certified packaging includes ISO14001, FSC, Cradle to Cradle certification, sustainable materials (FSC wood or paper, recycled cardboard or plastic), waste reduction (eco-designed packaging), compostability, and reuse.
  • Set up internal recycling system focussing on reusing packaging materials and storage aids.
  • Conduct annual audits and adjust recycling processes to maximise efficiency and minimise waste.

Goal 3

By 2025, we will cut tCO2eq emissions in our warehouse logistics by 20% by modernising our infrastructure and using zero-emission transport vehicles.

Measures

  • Use energy-efficient machines and conveyor belts with low power consumption.
  • Optimise warehouse layout to minimise transport routes within the warehouses and save energy.

Goal 4

By 2026, we will modernise our warehouse infrastructure by cutting energy consumption in our high-bay timber warehouse by 30% through implementing energy-efficient systems and using sustainable building materials in warehouse maintenance and expansion.

Measures

  • Install an energy management system to reduce energy consumption by improving insulation comprehensively to reduce heat loss.
  • Use sustainable and certified building materials for maintenance and expansion to improve the tCO2eq balance.
  • Modernise ventilation systems with energy-efficient fans and heat recovery systems to save energy costs.
  • Set up an innovation and training centre in the high-bay timber warehouse as a hub for guided tours, workshops and events. This will promote the exchange of best practices and showcase progress in energy efficiency and sustainable warehousing to drive cross-industry trends.
